Formulas

  • A formula in a spreadsheet is a mathematical or logical expression that performs calculations, manipulates data, or makes decisions based on the values present in the cells of the spreadsheet.

  • Formulas are used to automate calculations and perform various tasks efficiently.

  • In Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets, they begin with an equal sign (=) followed by the expression you want to evaluate.

Examples - adding two numbers

  • Adding cells together can be done with the following formula:

= A1 + 4

= A1 + B2

Examples - calculating the total

  • Calculating the total of a range of cells can be done like this:

= SUM(A1 : A10)

= SUM(A1 : B3)

Demo
