  • This lesson you'll be looking at the kinds of jobs that people do in the industry.

Log on to your computers and find two examples of good websites and two examples of bad websites. Screenshot all of them and put them in a Word document.

 

We'll feedback to the whole class in a few minutes. 

Activity

Building a website

  • What we are going to be doing today is building our agency.
    We need someone for each of the following roles:
    • Project Leader
    • Designer
    • Graphics and Artistic Designer
    • Website Tester
  • Everyone will also be a developer

Project leader

  • The project leader is often the person who will decide on how things should be done and ensure that everyone pulls their weight.
  • In today's lesson, the project leader will ensure that everyone is carrying out their duties and doing what they should be doing.

Designer

  • The designer is in charge of planning out how the website structure will look. 
  • Their main role, and what they need to do in this lesson, is to ensure that all the pages across the website have a consistent theme and layout.
  • The designer is also responsible for ensuring that content is separated effectively.
  • The designer also needs to ensure that the website meets the original requirements for the client.

graphic and artistic designer

  • The graphics and artistic designer's role is to ensure that all graphics and media are sourced correctly. 
  • The graphics and artistic designer's main role today will be to deal with adding images to the site to make the site look more graphically pleasing.
  • The other role they will need to carry out is to ensure that colour has been well-used throughout the site.

Website tester

  • The website tester will be in charge of occasionally testing the website. 
  • If things aren't right and they've slipped through the net (for example, pages don't look consistent) then you must notify the rest of the group
  • You'll also be what's called a product owner - someone who will stay in constant contact with the client to ensure that they are happy with the final product.

  • Your groups have been pre-picked at random. Get in to your groups.

  • Decide who would be best for each of the roles:

    • Project Leader

    • Researcher

    • Graphics and Artistic Designer

    • Website Tester

Planning it out

The web industry: analysis and design

  • Analysis
    • Within the industry, the analysis section of building a website is often the part that is done incorrectly.
    • When we are looking at what our website is to do, we need to outline it very clearly.
  • Design
    • What do you notice about the design of websites? Layout, colour and making the page into sections is really important.
    • Less is more, use pictures to describe what it is you want to get across

Designing our site

  • Before we can go ahead and design our website, we need to first decide:
    • who the target audience are going to be
    • what the website will look like
    • what pages we will have on the website

Target Audience

  • Identifying the target audience of a website or any digital design is very important. 
  • For example, if a website is designed for children you do not want to be displaying content that is relevant to adults.

Sitemaps

  • Any website that is built will have a resource like below that shows how all the pages on the website link together. This is called a sitemap.
  • Often if you type in the URL of a website and then sitemap.xml, you can get a machine-readable version of a sitemap. For example: apple.com/sitemap.xml.
