Images and the web

  • Whenever you use any kind of media such as graphics, audio, video or animation, you need to be mindful of any copyrights on them.
  • Certain websites, such as Pixabay, feature royalty-free images, meaning you can download them and not need to worry about copyright.
  • Other image searches, such as Google Images, may be subject to copyright.

Watermarking

  • A watermark is an identifying piece of text or pattern that is lightly embedded into a graphic.
  • This is often used to ensure that copyright requirements are enforced and prevent copyright being ignored.
  • They are also used to discourage counterfeiting.

Creative common license

  • A Creative Commons license is one of several public copyright licenses that enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted "work".
  • A CC license is used when an author wants to give other people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that the author has created.
  • CC make the work free, as well.
  • These presentations are shared under a derivation of the Creative Commons license.

The public domain

  • The public domain consists of all the creative work to which no exclusive intellectual property rights apply.
  • The rights of the work may have expired or have been made inapplicable. 
  • Anything in the public domain is usable by anyone.

Answer the following questions

  1. When downloading an image from the Internet, Sally sees the public domain logo. She is concerned about downloading the graphic. Should Sally be concerned and why?
  2. Explain the term Creative Commons
  3. Why should you be careful when using Google Images to download graphics?
  4. Look up two laws in the UK that affect copyrighted media
