Game flow

Learning Intentions

  • Learn how computer games flow

  • Learn how computer games are thought out

Success Criteria

  • I can provide examples of different video game genres
  • I can explain the differences between certain video game genres

What makes a video game different from a movie?

  • Write down what makes a video game different from a movie

  • Movies don’t have user interaction - the user doesn’t play the movie

  • The movie has one path, i.e. the same ending whereas the video game can often change and the ending doesn’t always have to be the same.

One ending...

Whilst it is definitely the case that there are many games out there with multiple endings (for example Fallout 3), most games only have one ending.

Storyboarding

  • Often in video games design the plan for how the game will flow from start to finish is created early using a storyboard.
  • A storyboard is much like one used in a comic strip, and it roughly explains the flow of the game from start to middle to the end. Most of the time these storyboards are visual, but they are sometimes created using nothing but text.

Thinking of a game you have played, pick one game you’ve enjoyed.

Complete the document brief that describes how the game progresses and the final goal of the game. Describe the ending that the player gets when they finish the game.

Task

You have been selected to be a game narrative designer for a new game called Dragonslayer.
The game is to be about a legendary warrior and a land covered in darkness under the fear of a mighty dragon.

Write a basic narrative using both a storyboard and an in-depth essay style description.
